What is LiFePO4 Battery Passive equalization?

Passive equalization generally discharges the battery with higher voltage through resistance discharge, releases the power in the form of heat, realizes the equalization of the voltage of the whole group, and strives for more charging time for other batteries.

  • start equalization condition
Passive equalization generally starts discharge equalization when the battery is almost fully charged, so the start-up equalization time of passive equalization is relatively short, from when the battery is nearly full to when it is fully charged, the equalization time is usually several hours depending on the charger.
  • Balance current
Since the passive equalization is a resistive energy-consuming equalization, the consumed energy is released in the form of heat, so charging the BMS will generate heat during the equalization process, so the equalization current cannot be set too high, otherwise the temperature of the battery pack will be too high. Generally, the passive equalization current ranges from 35mA to 200mA, and the greater the equalization current, the more serious the heat will be.

If the equalizing current is small, then in the case of a large-capacity battery pack with a large difference in power, the efficiency of the power balance effect is very low, and it takes a long time to achieve balance, which is of little use in practical applications. Passive equalization circuit is simple, low cost, suitable for battery packs with low capacity.

LVFU lithium battery is equipped with an active equalization module, the battery discharge depth is more, and the service life of the battery cell is longer.
